 "Good tough waterproof camera" 2009-07-02
By Ob1 (Michigan)
Bought the camera specifically to take pictures while snorkeling and sailing in the Virgin Islands recently. It worked pretty much as advertised.

The camera is waterproof to 33 ft. A "CAUTION DEPTH" warning appeared on the screen at about 25 ft. as I was free diving on the wreck of the Rhone. You can turn on the manometer and record the depth at which each photo is taken.

I swam and snorkeled with it every day for over a week and never had any issues with the water. It takes great snapshot quality photos. I can't scuba with it, but it goes about as deep as I want to free dive. I highly recommend adding the floating strap to keep it from sinking to the bottom in deep water. The strap keeps the 8000 afloat in both salt and fresh water.

I was a little disappointed with the panorama mode. The Olympus software is limited in the number of shots it can stitch together on the camera and it often joined them in the wrong places. Not a major issue for me since I can create the panoramas on my computer if I want to. But I wouldn't give the camera 5 stars here.

The camera seems to be sturdily built and has survived being dropped on concrete multiple times from heights of 4 to 5 feet.

I wasn't looking for a professional quality camera. Just a pocket sized one that could take good vacation pix and videos on the surface and underwater. The shots are decent. And the 12MP resolution gives me enough detail to crop and adjust as needed.

Cropping may be needed since it is easy to get part of your finger in front of the lens due to its position in the upper corner. Once you learn how to hold the camera this isn't an issue. But you will probably take a few shots (or your friends will) that need finger surgery.

Overall a good, rugged, general purpose camera. It is now my favorite go-anywhere camera.

 "River snorkelling" 2009-06-30
By J. Kerrison
Thus far this has done exactly what it says it will - it spent 3 very exciting days being snorkelled down the crystal clear waters of Bonito (Brazil) and has provided me with some excellent photos and video clips as mementos.

Not squashed it or properly drowned it yet...but initial indications are good.

 "Olympus works well" 2009-06-30

Purchased this camera for a trip to the Arctic. Worked very well, even in the cold temperatures. The pictures turned out very well. Easy to understand, and to use.

"STYLUS THOUGH 8000 OUT OF THIS WORLD" 2009-06-25
By Edgar Flotte
Awesome! Took it to the pool, six flags, etc. and the camera is still in one piece. I remember my old digital cameras who would be ruined just by a whale splash at Seaworld. Great pics at 12 megapixels. A++++ Kids resistant father's approved.

I forgot to close the charging port and the camera flooded and shorted when I jumped into the pool. I saw how it shorted and shutted off. I was sad since my previus Canon got fried just by a splash of keiko at seaworld. Well nevertheless, I let the camera drying for two days, with the ports (latches) open, in the heat (sitting in front of the dash on my windshield, the camera was burning but finally all of the fog was gone) I instered the battery and memory card and voila! The camera is working as new again, unbeliebable. The pictures may not be as good as my canon but oh man this camera is awesome!!!!!

"OK, But Audio is Terrible" 2009-06-23
By M. Lee (Austin, TX)
I was very disappointed with this camera, and with Olympus in general. OK, the camera itself is a nice little package. However, the audio on the videos was terrible (and that is being polite). I actually had to yell at the camera to get it to register my voice at all. Completely unusable. I also tried several other Olympus 'Tough' models, and they are all the same. I know this is not a video camera, but Olympus does tout the feature, so it should be at lest usable. I called Olympus Tech Support and they told me they'd never heard of this issue. I told them they should read Amazon's reviews soemtime. I also emailed Olympus (I really did want to keep the camera). They were supposed to answer within 48 hours. 4 days later I finally received a response that...the audio is not adjustable. I have returned the camera.
