 "don't use for snorkelling!" 2009-07-18
By Christoph Perkins (Zurich, Switzerland)
I bought a refurbished olympus stylus 850 and took it snorkelling in the sea. The first day it worked nicely, however image quality wasn't anyhting great. The second day water leaked into the camera, instantly killing it. I have tried a new battery, but the camera won't come to life again so for me it's a total loss. I was buying it for just that snorkelling occasion and am very disappointed. I advise anyone wanting to take underwater pictures to buy a professional housing for the camera of your choice rather than trusting the stylus 850 - it didn't work in my case!

"Take it for a swim or drop it on a rock... it'll still work!" 2009-07-04
By Candy (Austin, TX)
We got this camera a year or more agao as a replacement for a previous Olympus SW we misplaced. I simply cannot say enough good about this series. You can do some pretty rough stuff with this camera and simply does not stop working. Throw it in the pool, throw it against the wall... it's all good!

Okay, seriously though...

First the bad... the indoor picture quality is not all that great. It's "okay", but really, don't bother with indoor. Um, that's it for the bad qualities.

The good... you can take underwater photos and they turn out pretty darn good. You can take it in the pool, to the beach. Toss it in your beach bag, where the lounge chair fall on it, no problem. It's shock-proof, water-proof and basically kid-proof. I have some expensive camera equipment, but I don't worry for a single second about handing this to ANY kid and letting them snap away. They won't break it, it seems to be impossible to break.

The outdoor photos are STUNNING. The color quality is top notch for this class of camera. My photos from the pool are gorgeous, the ones for the beach are absolutely amazing. A birthday party outside for a 2 year old? Beautiful.

This is a great vacation camera - the only one we take on vacations (we live in Texas, it's all about the water when we go on vacation anyway). It's small enough that I can toss it in my pocket and if I sit on it, it will be fine :)

I cannot recommend this highly enough, folks. Seriously, get one if you have kids and wish you didn't have to worry about getting some expensive water housing for your existing camera or you worry you'll get your current camera wet. Just buy the thing. At [...]currently, you can't afford to say no :)

 "Was awesome...until 13 months later." 2009-06-22
By Steff (California)
So I bought 2 of these camera's May 08. THOUGHT they were the coolest things ever, shockproof, waterproof great to take dirt biking, took them to Mexico, played in the pool. Really good quality pictures, even underwater. Awesome not to have another case for it to be waterproof.

I just came back from another Mexico trip (June 09), WITH 2 DEAD CAMERAS...

Worked good first couple days, took it on a day trip, told other interested vacationers about how cool it was. And the very next day, my boyfriend's wouldn't take a picture, the screen would only say "Cover Open" (which is wasn't), it would only let him view pictures, then wouldn't even turn on. "Hmm, that sucks, at least we have mine" And the next day mine wouldn't take pictures, only view, and then stopped turning on. It would make mechanical noises, but thats it. We've tried turning off/on, took battery out, charged...

We've always followed the manual; made sure covers were closed, never dropped, never more than a few feet deep (rated up to 10), always rinsed/soaked after water use, and they randomly died.

"Great Little camera for all types" 2009-06-19
By Gina Gagliano
I have always loved Olympus cameras and the great photos they capture. I needed to replace a 5 year old Samsung (I needed a new battery and just could not get it anywhere). I was looking into the new Fuji WP, but I kept coming back to this great camera. Of course I would have loved to get the more expensive version of this camera, but it was too far out of my price range.

I had bought a blue version of the 850 a few months back for my mom (when they came out with the newer version). And I fell in love with the camera and all it's scene setting and ease of use. This pink one will now be hers and I'll be taking the blue one.

Even though I'll have to buy an xD card (all my other cameras have SD) I still couldn't see myself buying the less expensive Fuji. The pros of the Olympus outweighed that of the Fuji.

I love the macro options with the little LED to help light up a subject. I've always found that a flash overexposes any macro shot and the LED gives you light without blowing a picture out.

The Fuji and Olympus are both waterproof, but the Olympus is shockproof. A major plus if you use it in water and have slippery hands when exiting a pool.

This past weekend I tested the camera out in a coy pond using the video setting. It took some awesome clips of all the fish swimming around. I have yet to try it out in our pool, but I am anxious to experiment :D

8mp is also quite enough for point & shoot pictures. The Fuji has 10mp, but what's 2 more mp when the human eye only really sees at 3? Besides, anything I take with this camera isn't going to be printed out much larger than an 8x10...a 3mp camera even prints up a nice 8x10.

I still have yet to use many of the scene settings on this camera and using such things as the in-camera red-eye removal program.

Overall this is a great little point & shoot with style and versatility.
