I just got this camera for my birthday and it takes great pictures and short movies anywhere, even underwater! The reason why we can take this camera underwater is because of its waterproof case which protects the camera from anything, like sand and rain. I really enjoyed it because it was a lot of fun taking it to the beach taking pictures of it with my friends. It was definitely worth the price and you should for sure buy this camera.

this is a fun camera to have when going to the pool, beach or resort. We took it to Jamaica. The underwater pictures will turn out better when there is sunlight. Also if the water is not clear - obviously the picture wont be that clear. We had better pictures scuba diving when the sun was out an the water was calm. keep extra batteries on hand because when they get low it will die quickly. Also be prepared for a delay in the shutter speed. There is a lag between the time you take the picture and the picture is taken.

This camera was purchased for a recent trip to Maui it did a excellent job I took many pictures and videos I knew it recorded sound but to my surprise while reviewing one of the videos I took of some turtles and fish you could here whales in the back ground this made for a nice touch. The only reason that I did not give it five stars was because the view finder was impossible to see under water though after a while you can figure out where to aim the camera.Who really cares though take extra pictures and delete the bad ones....

 "Wouldn't power up " 2009-04-07
By A. Apars (Ontario, Canada)
Bought this camera for our Cuban vacation. We could never get it to work because it would not power up. The batteries included with the unit were expired, so we tried a new set configuring them every way possible. It only requires 2 AA batteries and it's not rocket science. Returned the camera for refund but am out the shipping cost. Upon return, the seller claims it works perfectly. Personally, with something so simple, I wouldn't take a chance.

"great camera for the price" 2009-03-23
By Ann M. Helbe
We bought this camera because we are kayaking now. We do tend to get wet, and don't want to bring our digital camera with us. My brother has this camera and told us about it. It's so easy to use, and transfer the pictures on the pc to send to family and friends. The safety strap assures that we won't lose it if we fall in the water. Nice, clear pictures...not as good as an expensive zoom camera, but you have to remember its purpose. It got wet and the pictures were still fine. would recommend this to others.

 "Great Camera" 2009-07-22
By S. Mongar
This is a perfect camera if you want one that you can beat around a bit and not worry about it getting broken or ruined.

We use this all the time when hiking, bike riding or hanging out in the pool. It is waterproof so I am able to take shots I could not get before since I can be in the water and not have to worry about splashing (or when taking pictures at the side of the pool.)

The image quality is pretty good for a point and shoot and cannot complain about prints I have had made. Up to 8 x 10 work well for the most part.

"IT LEAKS. Get a different camera." 2009-07-16
By Bailey Z. Rose (Orlando, FL)
I used to own the 770SW... great camera, virtually indestructable. Unfortunately, I had it stolen from me, so I 'upgraded' to the 1030SW.

Unfortunately, the 1030SW leaks. The first time I tried it out underwater, it streamed bubbles from the battery cover and died on the first day of my vacation. No pictures from that trip!

Back at home, I sent it in under warranty and got a replacement. It worked fine on land for a few months... but then I took another trip and, once again, it began leaking from the battery cover! I was careful not to use it in the water anymore, but the camera would act a little funny about batteries, saying they were dead after a couple hours, etc.

Finally, it died, and I sent it in again on some B.S. excuse to avoid having to say it was water damage. Replacement came in -- I took that diving, and once again, it leaked and broke.

The main selling point of this camera is that it's waterproof -- well, it's not that waterproof and will probably leak on you. Get another camera or, if you must get this one, GET AN EXTENDED WARRANTY covering all damages. It's a must.

Aside from the leaking, the pictures, movies, etc. you take will be pretty decent for a point-and-shoot. Having the capability to use a micro-SD in the XD adapter is nice, as micro-SD is a superior card and faster / cheaper / more space than the XD.

 "Waterproof? NO!" 2009-07-11
By James M. Hirshberg (Boston, MA)
Got this camera as a replacement for an earlier generation of Olympus's waterproof line. After four uses when snorkeling, it died. There is no question after reading many reviews that this camera is not waterproof. MUCH better to use disposable underwater FUJI cameras or get a case for a compact digital.

"Keeps leaking, sending back for the 3rd time" 2009-07-09
By J. Mason (Thousand Oaks, CA)
Decent little camera, if it only worked as advertised. I really liked the idea of having a smaller outdoor based camera that could take a little pounding and still function. Especially was high on it being waterproof and being able to take pictures in the pool. Heck, their advertisement shows 2 people cliff jumping with the camera into the water.

Due to it's waterproof requirements, I expected it to be limited in image quality and features (compared to non WP counterparts)...but it still takes decent shots for a point and shoot. I didn't have too high of expectations other then the basics and it's SW features.

Definitely not a good camera for taking pictures in non-optimal lighting scenarios. Tried to take pictures of my son playing Mighty Mites soccer inside a gym...and unless they are close enough for a fill flash or standing still, you aren't going to get much. Inside it's not all that great either, but when there is enough natural light...pictures are much better. Definitely harder to see the LCD in bright light, but not surprised. Battery life is much shorter then expected, but I also kind of knew that going in.

Problems started when I took it into the water for the first time, which was where I was the most excited about using;-(. I ended up taking it into a swimming pool (shallow end, never more then a foot or 2 under water). At first, it was too good to be true. Was working like a charm and enabled me to be pretty creative. Then after a couple of minutes, the LCD screen started changing to almost like looking at a Black and White negative, where I could barely make out shapes. Then it soon turned all while and I couldn't see anything. I would check it about every couple of hours, and it took roughly 1.5 days for the camera to "dry out" and for the LCD to return to normal.

Called their support line, tech says to send it in (on my dime) to get it repaired. Took the repair facility about a week to repair. As soon as I got it back, tested again in the water. After about 1 - 2 minutes in the water, same thing...sigh. called Olympus back up, they requested that I send it in for repair again (at least this time on their dime). Got it back after another week of being with out a camera. As soon as I could, tried it in a sink full of water...so far so good. Took it to the pool the next morning....same problem again!!! Just got off the phone with Olympus Support a few minutes ago, requesting that I send it in again where they will evaluate either "fixing" it again or "potentially replacing". So we'll see.

I'd have rated it 3 or 4 stars if it was actually WP and I wasn't having all this back and forth with Olympus. Unfortunately, there weren't very many options for other outdoor/WP cameras when I bought this back in January of '09. Now, I'd probably be considering a different model (Cannon probably) since I haven't been very satisfied with the Olympus product.

I love this camera!!! It takes beautiful picts both wet and dry. We were just on vacation in Hawaii and used it on a sailing trip with lots of splashing water and underwater in salt and fresh water as well as dry land shooting. For the most part the lens squeegee works real well. The pictures are sharp. Remember underwater shots are as good as the water is clear. I plan to use the camera for underwater shots of synchronized swimming. The video is great both on land and underwater.

"good for a fun / waterproof camera, but overall not great pics" 2009-05-30
By Justin Martin (Seattle, WA USA)
Bought this for my wife so she'd have a compact camera to take around. We were going on a trip around some beach areas and rivers, so I thought a waterproof model would be a good choice. Also I have a Pentax DSLR and it takes great pictures. However overall I wish we had gotten a compact Canon camera instead (I have an A-640, and it takes great pics underwater with the extra waterproof housing, which goes down to 100+ feet, unlike this Pentax which only goes to 10 feet!). This camera is "compact" but not super small, a little bulky still for a pocket. The biggest problem has been the focus and exposure... it always takes so long to focus, and often picks strange exposure settings. Also being used the the Canon, it's so difficult to get any kind of manual control (e.g. exp compensation) to override the auto settings on this camera. There are just a ton of little icons for every auto/scene mode you can imagine! Many shots come out too light or dark, or very grainy because the camera has picked a very high ISO. On the good side, we haven't had any problems with the camera leaking at all, it still works fine after a number of (not extensive) uses in and around fresh and salt water, as well as the occasional drop in the water glass as a party trick.

Anyway, the short of it is if you have extra money and really need a camera for the beach or rafting or snorkeling then this might be a good option. But if you want something to use around water once in a while but mostly just to have a good compact point and shoot digital camera, then look elsewhere.

"Great for bright light, on the water. Not good for low light." 2009-04-04
By Walk2Treat (Seattle, WA United States)
I take this camera kayaking with me and love it for those times. It takes very good photos in bright lighting situations. The lag time between shots is short (with a fully charged battery). The photos are accurate color and crisp. However, this is a terrible camera for indoors or low light. The camera cannot focus well in anything but bright light. Even with the flash, photos are often blurry. I use a Canon SD990IS for all the times I don't need waterproof-ness. The Canon is far superior in every other way, and I really miss the image stabilization when using the Pentax Optio W30. The only reason I don't just get the waterproof housing for my Canon is that then it is no longer a compact camera.

Pros:

Waterproof

Very good outdoor photos is good lighting situations.

Compact size.

Easy to use.

Starts up quickly.

Short lag time between shots with a fully charged battery.

Cons:

Horrible low-light and flash photos.

Frequently has difficulty focusing.

No image stabilization.

Zoom is ok, but not great.

Battery charger is difficult for travel because of it's size and the separate chord.

Our camera "some how" got dropped in a fire pit. It was slightly melted but still takes clear photos! And we can still download them onto the computer... It makes a few strange noises now, and I'm afraid it is no longer water proof. But because of it's unexpected durrability I would definately buy another one. The only downfall is that these types of accindents are not covered under warenty!

"Tiny camera but excellent photos; and yes it is waterproof!" 2009-01-02
By Candace (United States)
I bought one of these about two years ago and I've loved it! I've taken thousands of photos with it, at home and overseas, and been quite pleased with the results. Obviously it doesn't have the features of a big, expensive camera...but that hasn't stopped people from complimenting many of the photos (especially after they see the little thing I took them with). And it's so easy to take along everywhere. Yes, I have used it underwater several times and in saltwater no less, and had no leaks of any kind. However, I wasn't diving or otherwise dunking it deeply, merely sticking it underwater while sitting in a kayak or wading around a reef. :) One note, if you use it in saltwater, plan to clean the lens before using it again out of the water, as salt residue will collect on it. Speaking of the lens, when I got the camera I was concerned about the lack of any lens cover. I expected to constantly be getting a thumbprint or dirt on it, or that it might be easily damaged. But after lots of use (including often carrying it loose in a pocket), I've found the lens stays surprisingly clean. My only complaint is that the battery doesn't seem to hold a charge all that well anymore, but it's been through a lot of charge/discharge cycles. Excellent little camera!

The camera body is waterproof to 3m. It's dustproof too, so you don't have to worry about dust or sand getting inside. And it has passed drop tests at a height of about 1.5m. This is one tough little camera that you can take wherever action takes you.The TS1 records HD motion images with 1280 x 720-pixel resolution. It uses the AVCHD (MPEG-4/H.264) format, via AVCHD Lite which stores less data than other formats and thus lets you shoot more minutes of HD motion images before running out of memory.Just set the camera to iA mode, aim and shoot. The camera does the rest for you. It automatically sets the optimal mode for the shooting situation, and helps correct blurring, focus, and brightness problems. It also activates the Face Recognition function, which finds familiar faces in a group of people and captures them in a clear focus and with proper exposure.A retracting lens with folding optics is used in this 4.6x zoom lens system, which lets you take shots from the 28mm wide-angle to 129mm telephoto. This gives you the flexibility for virtually any shooting situation - even underwater shots, where the angle of view is naturally narrowed, or when you just want to fill the frame with your subject.

 "Well pleased" 2009-07-06
By Randall Garrett (San Antonio, TX USA)
I review and test various products used by field service workers - that is, people who make their living working outdoors a good deal of the time vs. those who work indoors, primarily behind a desk. One of the tools they use for every job is a digital camera. The vast majority of these people are self employed vs. draw a salary from a large corporation and equipment they purchase is paid for by themselves. Perhaps the single most common point of failure for digital cameras in this price range is the zoom lens mechanism. Thus, this camera one of a few we recommend for outdoor use. The 28mm (equiv) wide setting is most appreciated by users and the zoom is adequate for most conditions. The waterproof, dust and drop ratings are appropriate for these people. This particular camera is very well received by this market. Photos made are more than adequate. Of note - the primary aspect ratio for photos is 4:3 vs. the more consumer desirable 16:9. As with almost every camera in this price range, unfortunately there is no optical viewfinder and the flash is characteristically weak. Will be purchasing the newly announced Pentax Optio W80 next to test. The previous W60 was inadequate. Hope these thoughts help a prospective purchaser.

"No thank you. "Gimie" my money back" 2009-06-12
By Ali Roustai (Santa Barbara, CA)
I recently purchased this camera and tested it and ended up sending it back mainly because of picture quality.

Here are the pros and cons...

Pros :

* Very light and small.

* Decent video quality.

* Good battery Life.

* Ok pictures with flash on and very sunny days

* 4.6x zoom

Cons:

* I was very disappointed with "cloudy day" image quality. In other words, day time pictures when you are not using a flash . I took many picture most of which came out fuzzy and had great loss of detail and color aberration. I also felt that most pictures were underexposed dark looking . My Samsung i85 which is 2 years old does a much better job at this.

* I am not impressed by the Macro mode.

* The zoom is fairly slow and the zoom button is not very conveniently placed

* Small delay in turning on the camera .

* The Digital zoom is disappointing. Things start looking grainy very quickly!

My bottom line conclusion:

Unless you are a swimmer in a sunny area that needs a waterproof camera I'd stay away from this thing

I believe that all the water proof sealants and possibly a thicker lens makes it harder for light to get in and therefore image quality suffers...

Great value, This camera does for the waterproof/shockproof camera market what ipod does for the mp3 player scene. Head and shoulders above the rest. True high quality images and effective underwater capabilities. Can be used as a point and shoot or use in manual mode with a cornocopia of options to set or overide the default ones, change auto settings if you feel the need. Point being, the option is yours. Seems to have as many features as SLR! Check out the other online reviews to confirm my opinion or get tech reviews. Well worth the price. A huge value in a compact package and fills a void for those who don't want to sacrifice image quality or worry about rain, wet hands, beach sand, ect. Outdoorsmans prayers have been answered at last!

Though it has a couple of annoyances which are the awkward Zoom button and no lens cap, it is a Magnificent camera. Image Quality is great, thanks to the Leica lens.

You can go Anywhere, never worrying about water, rain etc. This is the perfect complement to my Olympus E510 DSLR. I take it everywhere and have taken great shots. It's like having a SUV to complement your Sedan.

Best part, you can switch between photos and Video recording immediately, with no dials to turn.

To sum up, if it were a Car, it's not a Land Rover, but a Porsche Cayenne, Solid, Refined, Comfortable and Reliable.

To top it off, when feasible, how about a 32GB SDHC capacity?? With one or two of these cards, storage problems would be a thing of the past.

 "Excellent Hybrid Camera" 2009-05-13

This camera has continued to delight me for the past few weeks since I received it. It is small and tough enough to carry anywhere, and the pictures it takes in good light are just unbelievable; no distortion, low to no noise, and super sharpness and near HDR looking range. It boggles my mind that a camera with folded optics can work this well. But there are two bonuses I couldn't have expected

One, it has a phenomenal macro mode. It takes just lovely pictures of objects as small as 1cm in size, and viewing the pictures on a large screen shows near-microscopic details. Plus, the lens position allows for ant's eye view pictures by just holding the camera upside down and using the in camera photo editing (!) to rotate the resulting picture.

Then, there is the HD video. . .on the sharpest AVCHD mode, the video is just unbelievable. Many full sized camcorders from just a few years ago are no match for this tiny marvel. Further, unlike the TZ5 the continuous auto focus actually works, and is not distracting or headache inducing on play back. It does produce a tiny bit of servo noise, so if you want the best audio it's still best to turn CAF off. On my sample the audio is good, not great; it would be nice if it had a microphone port, but you can't have everything. It even takes -macro video-, a unique feature. I have a video up on Vimeo of a test of the macro video capabilities; it might be worth taking a look at if you are interested in the video capabilities of this camera.

Overall recommendation; buy it! You will not regret your purchase. As solid feeling as this camera is, I'm sure it will serve me for years.

 "Unacceptable Dropped Frames" 2009-06-26
By Jack Olson (Redmond, Wa USA)
I received my Gopro 170 a day ago and I would say to anyone interested in this unit to look elsewhere. I made several attempts to get a satisfactory image but the camera skips frames and is not satisfactory to use even on YouTube. The specifications say it is 30 fps but the dropped frame rate is very high on the unit I received. The image isn't all that sharp and the colors are high contrast. As I said this camera is only a novelty and anyone that requires even a minimum of quality and stability will be extremely disappointed in this toy. I will be returning my Gopro tomorrow; it is hard to believe that anyone else would not do the same.

The Gopro is the sixth video camera I have owned and is the only one I have ever returned. All of the video I have seen made by the GoPro has the dropped frame issue to some extent although not as extreme as the unit I received.

"Not too bad of a product" 2009-05-30

I like this little video/camera. It's not crystal clear but you get the idea.

The batteries do not last as long as they say they do for video. I use it for drag racing and it's mounted on my dash. After about 20 minutes or so of video taping I needed to replace the batteries. I was unimpressed with this. Thankfully there only 2 AAA's. I bring a pack of 8 AAA's with me in case. Sound is good and easy hook up to any tv or camcorder. Down side with video you can't FF or Rewind the video. I have not tried using it to take pictures. But it is a neat little package which I am still glad I purchased it. To me the price was worth it.

Thanks.

Gopro Motorsports HERO WIDE 5 Megapixel 170 Degree Lens Camera (Silver)

I was excited to see the video clips on the Gopro site. My use is on a Motorcycle. When I go the product, I found the display a bit disappointing. It is very small and you read it upside down as you might look at the camera with the 'Hero' logo in the lower right corner. The unit itself is somewhat simple in design and doesn't give you the feeling of the quality in even the most common digital camera's you would buy today. Two double AAA batteries go in the back with a cover that you slide off. This cover has a tendancy to slide off while general handling of the camera and is annoying. Do not, let me repeat, Do not use alkaline batteries in the camera-- they don't function properly. With fresh batteries my unit will only run for a short while and then shut off. It also has very erratic operation. Changing to the recommended Eveready NI-MH batteries solved the problem and although not cheap with the charger and all, they are necessary.

The quality of video is ok, but does not work well in low light. This camera does not adjust well to varying light conditions and should generally be used in brighter conditions or full sun. The camera has no anti-shake capabilities so on a motorcycle things are jerky. Make sure you want the 170 deg wide angle as everything is noticably bent with the wide angle even in the focal portion of the picture. And, don't expect clear audio--you won't get it here. The audio quality is terrible. Even with the camera out of the protective waterproof case, there is a constant buzzing noise and the volume is faint even if you talk right in the microphone. In the case on a motorcycle, the sound is unuseable and unrealistic.

For digital cameras these days, being limited to a 2gb card doesn't make sense. The entry level cameras will take 8gb at this point. In talking with GoPro tech support, they are working on a patch to allow 4gb cards, but it seems like a major task for them. All in all, I am disappointed in the quality and performance of their newest product.
